Kuala Lumpur – Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor), Malaysia’s largest water services provider, today announced the winners of its inaugural Data & Digital Hackathon 2024, whose innovative ideas are set to revolutionise the water services industry.
This first-of-its-kind event received 149 registrations and was then shortlisted and then divided into two phases: a virtual qualifying phase, which involved 38 team submissions. This was followed by a final physical phase, where the top 10 teams competed with their pitch presentations at Avante Hotel, Petaling Jaya. The finale culminated with the crowning of Fresh Air team from Universiti Malaya who captured the judges’ hearts and minds with their winning idea of HydroRise Sentinel System, which is to monitor and predict the leakage in Air Selangor’s pipe distribution system.

Abas Abdullah, Air Selangor’s Acting Chief Executive Officer said, “The response to our inaugural Data & Digital Hackathon, which is the first by a water services provider in Malaysia, has been encouraging. It’s inspiring to witness the dedication and ingenuity displayed by the participants. The hackathon was aimed at empowering the lives of our 9.3 million consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya by promoting innovation, collaboration, and impactful solutions, propelling the industry’s inevitable move towards digitalisation.
“We firmly believes that the involvement of the general public including our consumers in the Hackathon is not just essential but invaluable. It provides a unique opportunity for them to directly contribute their perspectives, ideas, and feedback to improving water operational services. Their valuable insights have not only triggered but also shaped Air Selangor’s journey towards more consumer-centric solutions and services.

During the physical Hackathon event, participants had the opportunity to explore interactive exhibition booths showcasing a range of digital initiatives by Air Selangor. These included cutting-edge Analytics and Artificial Intelligence solutions, innovative Digital Enabler solutions such as mobile applications for consumers and staff, and advanced Digital Space and Digital Operations technologies like ICC and iERP solutions.
All submissions were carefully reviewed by a panel of Air Selangor’s subject matter experts and invited judges from renowned consulting firms such as EY and PwC.
