Kuala Lumpur – Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) and Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) are pleased to announce a collaboration to embark on a sustainable water recycling initiative that will augment the water services industry.
The collaboration, which is supported by the Ministry of Environment and Water and Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara (SPAN), brings together Malaysia’s largest water service provider and the national sewerage company and will be carried out by Central Water Reclamation Sdn Bhd (“Central Water”), a special purpose vehicle (SPV) company that will be 60% owned by Air Selangor and 40% owned by IWK.
The agreements as well as a cooperation letter were signed at a ceremony held today to officiate the signing of the shareholders’ agreement between Air Selangor and IWK in respect of the reclaimed water venture in Air Selangor’s operating areas, witnessed by YB Minister of Environment and Water, YB Dato’ Sri Tuan Ibrahim bin Tuan Man, and YAB Dato’ Menteri Besar Selangor, YAB Dato’ Seri Amirudin bin Shari.
This collaborative effort will unite the expertise of IWK and Air Selangor. The bio-effluent treated at IWK’s treatment plants will be supplied to Central Water for further treatment at Central Water’s treatment plant that is equipped with advanced technologies, to produce non-potable treated water that can be safely used for industrial purposes.
The non-potable treated water produced by Central Water will be distributed by Air Selangor through a dedicated pipe network to industrial businesses in Air Selangor’s operating areas for non-potable use such as industrial processes and non-food crop agricultural applications. Central Water’s maiden project will be to operate a reclaimed water treatment plant located in Setia Alam, Selangor, which can produce 4.0 million litres of non-potable treated water per day (MLD), with plans to subsequently increase the plant’s production capacity to 7.5 MLD.
This collaboration paves the way for the development of reclaimed water use in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. Apart from the Setia Alam treatment plant, Air Selangor and IWK have also identified other collaboration opportunities in respect of IWK treatment plants including the plants at Pantai 2, Kuala Lumpur and Seksyen 23, Shah Alam.
This collaboration between Air Selangor and IWK will optimise the nation’s available water resources whilst protecting the environment and highlights the long-term commitment of Air Selangor and IWK to the sustainable development of Malaysia’s water industry, whilst supporting the Malaysian government’s target to recycle 33% of the nation’s treated effluent by 2030 under the Green Technology Master Plan 2017 – 2030. Furthermore, this also meets the ministry’s strategic direction to produce 1,500 million litres per day of recycled water from treated bio effluent.
